Ontario to Ban Smoking in Cars with Children

A new bill to be passed in Ontario will fine smokers $250 for lighting up in vehicles when children under 16 are present.  Although the Ontario government admits it is a challenge to balance personal freedoms with health policies, they are ruling in favour of protecting the health of children potentially exposed to second hand smoke.  They argue that cigarette smoke is more damaging to children because they breathe more air relative to body weight and because their bodies are still developing.  In addition, exposure to cigarette smoke and role models who smoke may pave the way to future smoking addictions for these children.

What do you think?  Most smokers find it frustrating to be constantly told where they are not allowed to smoke.  But nearly every smoker, if asked if they would like to see their children take up smoking, would likely respond with a very definite “NO”.  And that may be the best reason of all for quitting.
